How to Layer Light

The types of layers of light, which can be layered to create the perfect amount of light for every situation: ambient; task; and accent lighting. It is important to ensure all three needs are met where applicable. Ambient lighting is general lighting and the main source of illumination for the room. It will most likely be a ceiling fixture that should be bright enough to light most, if not all, of the room. It can also be achieved with wall sconces and lamps when done properly. If your ambient lighting currently feels dim, try switching to LED lighting. The next layer of lighting is task lighting. Not every room requires task lighting, however, if you are looking to add task lighting, it is important to keep in mind the specific task. Task lighting can be achieved with vanity lighting, under cabinet lighting, reading lights, etc. The last type of lighting is accent lighting. This is the way to add the lovely glows around your space to highlight certain areas. If you have a piece of art, or an architectural element, using spotlights, picture lights, wall washers, etc. will be the way to achieve this specific layer of light. Together, all three layers will give you the most comprehensive look in your space.
