Condo Lighting

In many condos, there is often not enough light, or the light may not be in the right place. There are some simple ways to add more light without needing to add more junction boxes in the ceiling or walls.

    Swagging
    • Hanging a fixture using a chain or wire/cord off-center from the box by installing the canopy where the junction box is and looping the wire or chain where needed, using a hook installed in the ceiling to hold the fixture in its new place.
    • It is important to ensure that the hook is the right weight for the fixture.

    Pancake Box
    • A certified electrician can run conduit from a junction box to another area of the ceiling and surface mount a pancake box. The fixture can then be installed on the pancake box.

Drop Ceiling and Add Pot Lights
    • It might be possible to drop the ceiling and add LED pot lights. As LED pot lights are quite slim these days and do not require large recessed housing, this should only lower your ceiling by a few inches.

    Plug-in Wall Sconces
    • There are many options to choose from for plug-in sconces. They do not require a junction box, so they can easily be installed anywhere along the wall near a plug/outlet.
    • They can also be a great space saver beside the bed if you do not have enough space on a nightstand for a table lamp, as they can be hung on the wall above the bedframe.

    Table and Floor Lamps
    • There are dimming/switch devices you can add at the plug that will allow you to turn on the lamps with a switch or a smartphone app.
